His work was produced while in a mental institution near Bern, Switzerland.

“His production can be divided in two big groups according to their purpose: one of which can be called Bread Art. This consists of drawings which he makes for others in order to get colored pencils, paper, tobacco, etc. . . . The other group on which he himself places a much greater value comprises his gigantic autobiography.” Walter Morgenthaler
