In 1827 he published drawings of tattooed heroes from folk tales that were so popular he made other series. Warriors, supermen and vengeful demons followed, and by the 1840s he was enjoying great prosperity by painting pictures of famous kabuki actors. When pictures of actors were banned, Kuniyoshi turned to caricature, creating sloppy comic drawings that evaded their control.”Guardian
