The Department of Illustration

Illustration/Graphic Design?

Posted in General by The Department of Illustration on May 16, 2009

We had a good L5  crit for the music promo brief on Thursday, very pleased with all the work, some of which can be seen herehere and here and here. We also had a discussion about the difference between graphic design and illustration. So much ‘illustration’ practice around typography and animation at the moment, and also the use of ‘handmade’ graphics with a drawn feel in tune with how illustrators traditionally approach design briefs. Is the main difference perhaps a commitment to drawing, using the process of making to solve problems?   Paul Rand said of graphic design it ‘provides a context for understanding’ . Illustration can also be poetic, mysterious, provocative, less concerned with legibility or clarity of message.
