folk art

Posted in Decorative, Historical, Ideas, Writing, Theory, Visual Language by The Department of Illustration on August 13, 2009

I am in the middle of writing an article for Varoom on folk art and illustration. I am amazed at how neglected this whole area is. Why is it called ‘outsider art’ when it is something that is intrinsically democratic in nature? If everyone can do it, who are these ‘insiders?’ And why can it not be percieved as valuable without some kind of academic rationale? sigh…

I don’t see how or why you might think that outsider art is democratic. Wouldn’t that describe a decision making process as opposed to something visual?
